Bal began her television career in Ottawa, working at Rogers Television. After graduating from Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication, she started writing for CTV’s Canada AM and subsequently worked at CTV News Ottawa.
Living and working in the nation’s capital, Bal was recruited to help launch the National Breaking News Desk at Postmedia (formerly Canwest News Service). She covered everything from business and politics, to health, crime, and sports. Her published work, including stories on Omar Khadr and the Conrad Black trial, has appeared on the front pages of the National Post, Montreal Gazette, Vancouver Sun, and the Ottawa Citizen.
Bal returned to British Columbia to work for Global National before joining CBC News in 2011 as a staff reporter, where she developed and launched social media strategies for CBC’s news divisions in B.C. and Alberta. In 2013, Bal made a bold move and stepped down from her full-time job. She recalibrated and launched Wrise Productions Inc.
Bal continues to work for CBC in a freelance capacity. In 2016, Bal was awarded the highest honour in B.C. journalism — a Jack Webster award for her continued coverage of Syrian refugee resettlement. She is also the recipient of multiple regional and national Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards. Bal’s digital storytelling skills have been recognized by the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA) and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. In 2017, Bal was a finalist for a Canadian Screen Award — celebrating excellence in film, television and digital media.
In 2018, Bal produced SOLD!, an original CBC podcast about the role of foreign investment in B.C.’s real estate market. The podcast reached the top of the iTunes Canada chart, debuting at number one in the first week of launching. It also earned Bal another Jack Webster award.
